Results - Whaingaroa Hoe 2011

Around 500 paddlers came to Raglan on May 7th to compete in the 17th Annual Whaingaroa Hoe.

Racing started at 9am with an 8km Novice and Junior Race, Tumanako from Turangawaewae had a strong race finishing well in front of the pack in 40 minutes. Local Hamilton girls Taniwharau took out the Junior Girls division, in front of Ataamira junior girls who flipped out early in the race, but recovered well to finish only 41 seconds behind Taniwharau.

Local Whaingaroa team Roofracks won the Novice Womens Race which had 9 teams competing. Other standouts in the race was a stong performance from Waikato River paddlers “Paddle Waikato” in the Novice Mixed and 5 + 1 from Parihaka Sports, Whangarei who won the Novice Mens division. We hope to see all you new paddlers stepping it up next year and racing in the 24km!

Next up was the womens and mixed 24km race. Six Mixed Teams and Twenty three Womens Teams lined up on the Start, a great tribute to Chrissy Herbert whose memorial trophy is awarded to the first womens team to cross the line. The Last Crystalz, a mixed all Whanau team from Kaitaia led the race from start to finish, finishing in 1hour 41minutes, a solid performance also from 2nd place getter WDBA mixed Whanau Pack. The Manu’z and Jemima’z from Haeata Ocean Sports dominated the Womens 24km Race, the team consisted of Top Whitewater Paddlers and top NZ Master Women paddlers, they were chased home by another Whanau team ‘Inano from Porirua Canoe Kayak Club consisting of sisters from the Hodges Whanau. Master Womens team Wha kore Ma were third overall and took out the master womens division.

There were lots of close finishes in this race and overall not much time difference from the first waka to the last waka – Well done Wahine Ma!
Some teams to be congratulated are Where’s Wal? Mixed team consisting of 5 golden master paddlers and 1 senior master paddler …..inspirational stuff!
Taniwha Wahinez, Manukau Red and Team Awahou ; all Senior master women placing very well overall.

To remember Chrissy Herbert we invited her Whanau, friends and teammates to come share the day and watch the morning’s races from the spectator vessel Wahine Moe. The feedback from those on board was very positive, and we thank you all for making the effort to come to Whaingaroa to celebrate and share with us. Having the Wahine Moe on the start line and around the harbour certainly added to the atmosphere and we look forward to having her on the water next year to catch more of the action.

In the mens 12km (which was actually 14km) top male paddler Bryce Irving won convincingly, followed by Mark Malaki Williams on a rudderless Waka

Mens 24km Race started at 1.30pm a strong outgoing tide made for an interesting and fast start. The top 5 teams in this race changed around a lot and Paul Roozendaal – steerer of Mean DNA said it “was one of the most exciting races I have done”
Vaka Manu Opens have established themselves as the mens team to beat backing up their Tauranga Harbour Challenge 1st place with a win at the Whaingaroa Hoe. Long time paddling rivals Mean DNA and Herberts on Tour battled it out till the end with Goodyear finishing just in front of Whanau team Herberts.
Taniwha Grizzles White had a great race coming in 4th place, followed by a throw together team captained by Ray Lambert. Parihaka Master mens with paddlers from Napier, Whangarei and Auckland had a strong race taking out the master men’s division.

The Womens W1 and W2 race was the last start of the day, again the strong tide making a tricky start, some waka facing the other way! Vesna Radonich was first over the line in the this race, followed by Ngaire Pehi, then Lianne Reaburn.

Final results for the $250 Club Prize were: 1st with 24 points Parihaka Sports, Whangarei followed by Manukau Outriggers with 19 points, and Turangawaewae Waka Sports with 18 points.

Timekeeping was made very difficult due to the change in venue, teams finishing outside of the finish buoys, and the weather, sunshining on wet waka and rain on timesheets. We welcome your comments and feedback

We look forward to seeing you in 2012.
