Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and Waka Ama New Zealand have a lot in
common; we share similar values, we are well connected in communities throughout Aotearoa and we share a strong
passion for Waka Ama . Waka Ama is currently the fastest growing water
sport in the country with our membership growth of almost 70% over the last 3
years. Both organisations are looking to
grow the sport even further and reach all New Zealanders.
The partnership will be formally launched at the Waka Ama
Sprint Nationals, the largest event on the 2016 calendar with 10,000 plus spectators
expected, taking place at Lake Karapiro from Monday 18 January
to Saturday 23 January 2016.
Over 3000 paddlers, aged 5 to 75 years old, from Kaitaia to
Christchurch will compete
for national honours over distances of 250m to 1500m.
“What better way to start off an exciting partnership than
with our biggest event on the calendar taking place in just a few weeks “ says
Lara Collins, CEO of Waka Ama New Zealand.
We look forward to working closely with Te Wānanga o
Aotearoa to provide further opportunities to membership and to continue to grow
our sport.
