Appointed Coaches - Waka Ama New Zealand 2019 IVF World Distance Championships

Waka Ama New Zealand are pleased to announce the Premier Men and Womens Coaches for the 2019 IVF World Distance Championships (9 - 16 August 2019 - Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast Australia)



Myk Nuku

New Zealand National Distance Coach - Premier Men

Myk has a wide range of coaching experience both the practical and theory including completing a masters thesis on Elite Waka Ama.  Myk has 20 years paddling experience with the majority of these also coaching.  

Myk was the Elite Open and Master Men Coach for the New Zealand crews at the 2017 World Long Distance Championship.  The Elite Men Coach for the World Sprint Championship 2016 where they won Gold in Elite Men Open 500m.

Myk has experience and a skill set that will be an asset to the campaign including continued research and testing to continue to improve and advance his coaching skills.

Waka Ama New Zealand are happy to have Myk reappointed for the 2019 World Distance Championships and the experience he will provide.






Corrina Gage

New Zealand National Distance Coach - Premier Women


Corrina is a widely experienced and respected coach both nationally and internationally.  Corrina was instrumental in assisting with the development and delivery of the Waka Ama NZ coaching framework.  Corrina has been coaching Waka Ama since 1992 and has numerous coaching achievements to her name including coaching the first New Zealand Women's Open crew to win gold at the World Sprint Championships.  Most recently coaching two crews and V1 paddlers at the World Sprint Championships in Tahiti receiving 3 golds, 2 silver, 2 bronze and multiple finalists.  Corrina is also coach to Team Aotearoa competing in this years Na Wahine o Ke Kai. 

As a paddler Corrina is one of New Zealand's most experienced international long distance competitors.  Corrina sees this role as an opportunity to develop coaches and paddlers in the long distance format and to bring her hands-on knowledge of Waka Ama and her passion for empowering paddlers and coaches to the Long Distance 2019 campaign.

With her proven track record of success Waka Ama New Zealand  are happy to announce Corrina's appointment.
