The event is called Te Wahapū o Whanganui. Te Wahapū reflects the purpose of the event: to provide a safe pathway for paddlers as they move towards more challenging waters, including the bar crossing. It also captures the character of the course area, encompassing the estuary, the river mouth, and the seaward environment, while acknowledging the connection between the awa and the moana and the environmental impacts that shape this space.
The event will provide an opportunity for paddlers to participate in a winter paddling event while showcasing the unique environment of the Whanganui River and coastline (conditions permitting).
