The Tawhiti Rahi Ocean Challenge back for 2026, and the iconic Poor Knights Crossing course is back on the cards.
This is an open ocean downwind paddling event for oceanski/surf ski, waka ama and paddlefoil competitors, and is regarded as one of the most challenging events on the ocean racing calendar in Aotearoa.
Course Options
There are two course options, the final course to be determined based on the wind direction forecast for race day, aiming for the downwind course. The course decision will be announced in the week prior to the event.
- 25km Poor Knights Crossing - Cross this iconic open ocean stretch between the Poor Knights Island and Tutukaka.
- 32km Coastal Challenge - Race down the spectacular and wild Northland coastline.
This is a challenging open ocean distance event. All competitors must be competent in hazardous open ocean conditions. You may be asked to provide evidence of your competence prior to your race entry being accepted.
