McGintys 2004 Tauranga Harbour Challenge

Even one month old baby Cameron got into the spirit of things when he came down to cheer on the paddlers who battled it out on the Tauranga Harbour this weekend.

Once again we were blessed with great conditions, making it good racing for all. Kiwi Kaihoe from Te Nui a Te Ika OCC set the mark high for the Women's race, completing the 25km course in 2hr 00min 55s.

It is an awesome feeling going out on to the start line, and looking across the water to see over 250 fellow paddlers sitting next to you. The tension starts to mount as everyone waits for the red flag to drop, and you're off.

Team Good Year from Te Au Rere Waka Ama Club showed their dominance once again, finishing the Open Men's race with a lead of over 3 minutes. In a time of 1hr 45min 54s.

The Teams
Special mention has to go to the two international teams made the journey to Tauranga, both from Capricorn Coast Outrigger Club in Australia, we hope you enjoyed your stay.

And also a big thanks to all those paddlers who traveled from all over the country to make the event.

The Downside
Unfortunately I have to end this article on a sour note.
As one of our main sponsors, it was disappointing to hear that Ally Kjeldsen had a custom made steering paddle removed from her canoe while in the loading area.

If you have this paddle please send it back to Ally
