The 9th Bi-Annual Portage Crossing sparked up a glorious sunny day, for paddlers to enjoy while they retraced the ancient route that Maori used when discovering the Manukau Harbour for the first time.

A challenging race to say the least, when you look at the times, don’t forget to add 1 hour, the time it took all the paddlers to push their waka 5kms, on trailers and trollies from Auckland Rowing Club Panama Road, through Portage Road Otahuhu, to the shores of Manukau Harbour.

If there was a prize in this section it would go to the Cookies for there double banger contraption (two waka on one trailer) and Tamaki, a special trolley with a little wheel for the ama. Special thanks go to Constable Hemi from the Tamaki Club for providing the escort service.

Team Phoenix from Akarana Club, led on water and land, soaking up all the hurdles in there way. Waka Mama’s from Waitakere Club took the women’s section out.

To all the Clubs that supported this event, thank you heaps from Portage Crossing outriggers. Hope to see you all at the 10th Portage Crossing scheduled for February 2006.
