Notice - Worlds 2006 - Men's Division

The selection process for the 2006 Worlds began in December 2004 with nominations being received from those men who were interested in trialing out for teams.

It was made clear then, and has been on several occasions subsequently, that each paddler needed to establish a personal record. Most paddlers have done and are doing this and it is great to see the commitment that is being put in towards our goal for Gold Medals at the Worlds.

Paddler's personal records have assisted in compiling a "top 40 paddler" list in each age category. This list will be finalized at the end of August, after the last round of time trials.

It is very unlikely that a paddler from outside the top 40 list will be selected for the Worlds (there is a maximum quota of six W6 teams 6 x 6 = 36 paddlers).

The top 40 paddlers in each age category will be asked to attend the men's training camp at Lake Rotoiti on the weekend of 24/ 25 September.

The October trials will mainly be a process of determining how many of the top 40 are good enough to attend a World event. We have been clear about the fact that we will not seek to fill up quota spots with teams who aren't good enough to put in a creditable performance.

It is recognized, and not a problem, that some of the top 40 paddlers may be competing at the October trials in a regional team. The process allows for that to happen and NKOA has actively supported the regional initiatives that have been underway in most of the regions. But if a regional team has a paddler who is outside the top 40 it is unlikely that paddler will be selected for the Worlds. It is paddlers that are selected, not teams. Teams will then be formed from the selected paddlers.

A major part in building the database of top paddlers has been the series of W1 time trials which have been held around the regions over the past couple of months. Most of our top paddlers have been doing these trials. However a large number of those paddlers who were originally nominated have not attended a W1 time trial. A list of those paddlers appears below.

Paddlers on this list may not have a sufficient record to be considered for selection. If you are on the list below and still want to go to the Worlds you should attend the last time trial(s) that are being held around the regions this month (see details of where and when these are being held on the website).

This information is being communicated as widely as possible as it may be your last chance to be considered for Worlds selection.
