Waka, paddles, life jackets, buoys, rope, motor boats, clothing all pose a potential risk to ship this algae from one waterway to another.
You can go to this link to view more information about this algae,
www.biosecurity.govt.nz/didymo
The main points to prevent the algae from spreading is:
1. washing everything (see Cleaning methods for freshwater activities).
I think that this washing protocol must be done before you load the waka onto the trailer to the destination.
Also this includes all paddles, life jackets, ropes for lanes, buoys, flags, pipes for the flags...EVERYTHING!!!..right down to undies need to be soaked (at home of course)...just to make sure that we're doing our bit for the cause.
There's also a solution to kill potential algae (snot rot). This will be great to have available, a bucket of solution for each paddler
You are encouraed to practise "boat and equipment cleaning" as one a priority, especially for those that are lake and/or river hopping.
Let's do our bit to keep our waterways 'DIDYMO FREE'.
