ROTO HOE CANCELLED ON SATURDAY

ROTO HOE CANCELLED ON SATURDAY

Saturday dawned wet and windy for the Roto Hoe race on Rotoiti.

The organisers waited until the last possible moment hoping that Tawhirimatea and Tangaroa would sort out their differences and leave us with calm waters. However, that was not to be, and the race was duly cancelled. A quick rush of cellphones were used to advise those travelling, to stop where they were and return home.

Our early-bird Waka Ama whanau shared the disappointment of not being able to paddle, but not all was lost - Te Au Rere laid on a quickfire breakfast of hot wholesome soups and yummy sausages while sheltering from the blasting rain.

This has been the first cancellation of a Roto Hoe race, and we do sincerely apologise to those who had travelled from afar, such as Whakatane, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Raglan, Gisborne, and Maketu to name a few places.

The race was cancelled because of the weather conditions and the concerns for the safety of our paddlers. The organising committee will be meeting to see if we can include this race later in the year, but more on that soon.

Thanks to all our loyal paddlers. We certainly hope to make it up to you for the next one. In the meantime, keep paddling, keep happy.
