Approximately 600 paddlers took part in the day which was Auckland’s biggest Secondary School Waka Ama regatta in the 10 years it has been held.
Beautiful tropical weather and warm, still water made for a true Polynesian setting for this Ancient Polynesian sport.
Epsom Girls Grammar were the stand out school of the day with their impressive 1, 2, 3 placing in the Division 1 Girls Championship Final.
Southern Cross Campus won the Boys Division 1 Championship Final with the fastest time of the day 1m.11sec.10.
Tangaroa College were also very strong in the Division 2 grade (Division 2 means: Steerer provided) Winning the Championship final in a time of 1min.28 a full Waka length ahead of second place James Cook High.
Epsom Girls also added the Division 2 Girls Championship final to their haul of wins, just ahead of second place Onehunga.
Manurewa High won both the Division 1 mixed championship final and the division 2 mixed championship final, stamping their authority on the mixed grades
The race distance was 350m and there were 86 races held from 9:00am – 4:00pm, 40 Volunteers and 8 canoes were kindly provided by clubs from throughout the Auckland region.
Most teams will now put their heads down and get back into training for the New Zealand Secondary School National Championships which are taking place from the 28-30 March at Lake Okareka in Rotorua.
