Another successful day was enjoyed by all in the 2nd regatta in the Little Nipper Series held on the Rangitaiki River in Thornton.
This time the Tarawera Outrigger Canoe Club proved to be strong in all divisions with the absence of the strong Tuatara Wakaama Club contingent who dominated the 1st regatta.
W6 times ranged between 46 minutes to 51 minutes for all crews to complete the 6km course with the overall time going to the Ohinemataroa Intermediate Girls Crew in a time of 46:00:29 followed closely by the Intermediate Boys Crew Mangopare with a time of 46:34:35. The crew, were one paddler down but still chose to compete, so well done to you boys.
Top crew in the Midget Boys Section was Tarawera Stingrays. Once again this crew were one paddler down but they surged on to cross the line in a time of 48:03:43. Along with them the Manukatutahi Midget Girls Crew crossed the line in 51:15:51.
Once again the singles proved to be a popular event with all entrants opting to complete the 3km course rudderless. We were fortunate enough on the day to run the singles division by division.
First up were the midget girls who completed a two-kilometre course. First girl back was Te Kahurangi Rapana from the Tarawera Outrigger Canoe Club in a time of 19:17:45 followed by Mereana Hata of Te Waka Hoe o Pokohinu. Judging from the 1st regatta held both girls have improved tremendously. I say keep your eyes out in the future for these two youngsters. In third place was Margenta Walker also of the Tarawera Outrigger Canoe Club.
Next up was the Intermediate Girls with five in this category. Now this was a great race to watch with the front three paddlers of Josephine Wilson of Te Waka o Pokohinu battling with Mellani Walker and Atea Rangihika of the Tarawera Outrigger Canoe Club. All girls were within seconds of each other to the turning buoy. Josephine pulled her waka around easily but the Mellani struggled to pull her canoe around and gave room for Atea to overtake and chase the leader where in the end she had to settle for second. Josephine crossed the line in a time of 25:05:37 followed closely by Atea on 25:43:38. As the points add up both girls are now on even points heading the series, so will be great to see the challenge between the girls over the next two regattas.
The midget and intermediate boys singles were run together with Ashley Roozendaal once again taking line honours in a very comfortable style, completing the 3km course in an overall time of 23:18:27. Next to cross was Ngarimu Grace who has improved vastly since the 1st regatta. Ngarimu had flipped 3 times in the 1st race and came back to take line honours in this regatta for the intermediate boys. Ka pai Ngarimu.
The next regatta in our series will be back on the Whakatane River on the 27th April 2007.
If anyone is interested in attending the next regattas in our series you are more than welcome. We will help provide waka if necessary.
Hope to see you all at the next regatta……
