The committee this year put up for grabs 4 extra taonga for the winners of Open Mens and Womens, Masters Men and Womens, which increased teams competitiveness edge. This Regatta's purpose is to promote healthy lifestyles and participation at all levels, and is a sprint race which covers a 300 mtr course, on Ohinemataroa River, adjacent to the Information Centre in the Centre of Whakatane township, and one of the most idyllic scenary.
Some real exciting racing on the day with some new paddlers racing their first regatta, this is were the waka ama bug starts for many of them, also many teams come back every year just for the fun of it ,but some have a very healthy competitive streak and have the aim to try and win titles. This year saw Team Roozendaal winners of last years Open Mens Section get pipped at the post by Uprising crew lead by Hemi Wahapango (World Junior Champ).
Team entries fees are always kept at a minimum of $30 per team and is free to midget teams. The committee ensures that winners of each grade receive Prizes - The popular Committee T/shirts and other prizes, over $2,500 worth of prizes and spot prizes are given out on the day.
