Results - Whaingaroa Race

Last Saturday Nga Tai Whakarongo and Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka hosted the annual Whaingaroa Race. We had a huge turn out - about 250 paddlers turned up to compete in some windy and VERY wet conditions.

First off we had the junior 10k, this is the first year we have held a junior race and we had 5 teams compete. The Orange County Choppers led from the start and took out the Junior Mens and Team Wairere from host club Nga Tai Whakarongo won the Junior Womens.

Next start was the Mens W1 and W2, who paddled about 12km. It was a close race between Shannon Moon, George Thomas, Owen Pau'u and Tonga White, the latter taking out the Master Mens W1 and Owen the Open Mens W1. Four Mens teams competed in the W2 division and all made it in before the W1's, Well Done!!

The Mens and Womens W6 course was altered this year - making it slightly longer than previous years.
12 Womens teams in the W6 Race (6 open / 6 masters) and 2 mixed - Ururoa from Ruamata and the local team - Whaingaroa.
The start was held in the estuary - all teams had to vie for the gaps in between the walkbridge pylons. No major crashes YAY!!
The Womens division was won by Tauranga Moana Womens - they were also awarded the Chrissy Herbert Memorial Trophy.
Miti Remix - were close behind, winning the master womens, followed by Whaingaroa Mixed.

Awesome participation in the Womens W1, W2 and Mixed W2 considering the weather got worse as the day went on. Peter and Lianne Reaburn from Waitakere took out the Mixed W2 from Lisa and Jay from Horouta, who came in 2nd. 3rd, Kelstonians from Waitakere, 4th Rashley from Tarawera.

Master Women Heather and Vicki from Horouta competed with Juniors Ihipera and Te Manawanui from Nga Tai Whakarongo in the Womens W2, with the juniors getting an edge on the masters at the finish.

Georgie Were from Akarana was the first woman to cross the line, followed by Jenny Tonkin who won the open womens.

14 canoes in the Mens W6 start and an even tighter start in the estuary as the tide had gone out more!
Team Goodyear and Herberts on Tour battled it out again, Herberts beating Goodyear to the finishing line by 12 seconds. Vaka Manu Open 3rd, and Vaka Manu Masters, finishing next - 1st in the masters.
