The heavens
Matariki is the Mâori name for the small cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, in the Taurus constellation. It rises just once a year; in New Zealand it comes into view low on the north-eastern horizon, appearing in the tail of the Milky Way in the last days of May or in early June, just before dawn. This heralds the Mâori New Year.
On tuesday 29th May, representatives from Hoe Tonga meet with the Event organisers from Katakata ltd running Matariki celebrations in the Wellington region. From this meeting and in celebration of Matariki, Hoe Tonga Pacifica Waka Ama Association agreed to hold a 10KM race in honour of these events. See panui's.
