A Photo Finish camera works, by taking 500 photos of the finish line every second. The photos are then joined together and then by measuring the distance from the start of the photo to the nose of the canoe we are able to determine the time taken.

If a canoe crosses the finish line slowly it will appear in more of the photos taken by the camera. When the photos are joined together it makes the slow canoes look long and stretched out. Fast canoes will look a bit short and stumpy.
