Gisborne gold rush at national champs - The Gisborne Herald

TWO days into the national waka ama championships and Gisborne's medal coffers are filling fast.

Horouta Waka Hoe and Mareikura, as expected, underlined their superpower status with a swag of gold, silver and bronze at the week-long champs on Lake Karapiro yesterday.

Horouta ended the day with 12 gold, four silver and five bronze while Mareikura collected five gold, two silver and two bronze.

Turanga Ararau also made the podium with a silver and a bronze.

The crack Hinerupe Maidens crew led Horouta's charge with a gold rush -- the junior 19 women's W6 500 metres, W6 1000 and WT12 500 and J16 W6 500, W6 1000 and WT12 500.

Their other gold medal-winning efforts came from Dirty Dogs (intermediate men's W6 500, W6 1000 and WT12 500 combined with Maia), Turn It Up (J19 men's WT12 500), Hinepukohurangi (int women's WT12 500 and W6 500).

Mareikura's golds went to Kaboosh (mid women's WT12 500), Yeah Boy (midget men's WT12 500), Te Wherowhero (J16 men's W6 1000), Bubbalicious (midget women's W6 500, W6 250).

Turanga Ararau's Kahurangi crew won silver in the midget women's W6 500 and bronze in the W6 250.
