Gisborne clubs end NZ champs on medal high - The Gisborne Herald

GISBORNE'S Horouta Waka Hoe finished the national waka ama championships as they started them -- in golden style on Saturday.

Paddlers were tested by 32kph wins on Lake Karapiro, which saw some racing delayed and tested crew's ability to turn.

Horouta and fellow Gisborne club Mareikura picked up more medals to cap a fine regatta for Te Uranga o Te Ra region clubs.

Horouta's Manawahine picked up gold in the O23 women's WT12 500 and silver in the W6 500 and W6 1500.

Mareikura's E Ki Ra were second in the O23 women's W6 1500.

Horouta's Malicious crew were third in the O23 men's W6 500 and W6 1500.

Horouta's Dirty Dozen, were second in the O23 WT12 500, missing out on gold by 0.07 of a second.

Another Horouta crew, Kairahi Toa, took silver in the open women's W6 500.

Mareikura collected three medals in the master women's division.

Mareikura Masters won a thrilling WT12 500 final and Hoa Waka were second in the W6 500 and W6 1000.
