We had a good day in Whaingaroa this year, around 300 paddlers competed. The first race of the day had 17 waka, with novice and junior paddlers from New Plymouth, Tauranga, Hamilton, Auckland and Raglan.

This is the first year we have run a novice division, we are pleased that this division was well contested and we will hold the division again next year.

Teams from WDBA took out the Mens, Women's and the Mixed OC6. Hoe Aroha Teams took out the Juniors Women and Men. The 3 Whaingaroa novice womens teams came in within 30 seconds of each other placing second, third and fourth.

Second race of the day was the Womens and Mixed OC6. All the teams shotout in a fast start in the OC6 race. There were a variety of conditions in this race with heavy rain, side wind and head wind and a big push into a strong incoming tide for the first turn.

The local Whaingaroa mixed team were first to the turn and battled with the Womens Team - Team Tui thoughout the race, Team Tui getting a lead in the last 5 km. Team Tui crossed the line first to win the Chrissy Herbert Memorial. Followed by Marino winning the Mixed Division, then the Akarana girls - Ti Toki Namaka 2nd in the womens.

We missed out on having a master womens division due to lack of entries, so Once were Mermaids (master women) came in third in the Open div.

At the same time as this race the mens OC1 and OC2 was held, Hemi won the race which was 12km. Followed by Lance. Third place was won and lost at stages in the race by James, Paul and Kingi from Hei Matau. James ended up crossing the line in third Open men.
Arno from Hoe Aroha won the Master Mens, followed by Craig from Pakuranga and Gordon McKay second and third.

The last race of the day was the Mens OC6, An outstanding effort from the Grizzlies who are heading over to Hamilton Island, saw them place 1st and second. Three of their teams placed in the top 5.

The mens race was really competitive. Third Place went to Herberts On Tour, and Fourth to Team Goodyear.

Womens OC1 Race was won again by Georgie Were. There was a minute or two in between each finisher. Vonnie and Jackie in an OC2 were 2nd over the line, then Pauline Benson from Akarana.

We really appreciate all the Clubs who make a big effort to come and support our race every year – In particular Mitimitaga Ole Pasifika.

Thank you to all our sponsors and supporters who donated Prizes and Spot Prizes. A big mihi also to Whaingaroa ki te Whenua and the Kokiri where we host our meal and prize giving each year.
