Clubs from the TPOTI region are encouraged to nominate their paddlers and teams for the Waiariki Bay of Plenty Sports Awards.

The first Bay of Plenty Sports Awards was held in 1969. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s, when Sport Bay of Plenty took over the stewardship of the awards, that they gained the prestigious reputation they hold today. This year with a return to Rotorua and the Rotorua Events Centre, the Awards look to build on the success of all that sport has on offer and to celebrate excellence in a gala evening.

Also presented on the night are the Bay of Plenty Secondary School Sports Awards. These awards recognise sports sanctioned by the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Association and include the Bay of Plenty Polytech Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, the Destination Rotorua Boys Team of the Year, the Eves Realty Girls Team of the Year, the EastPack Best Student Contribution to Sport, the Leading Edge Communication Coach of the Year and the Marathon Visual Media Service to Sport award.
