Once a year, twinkling in the winter sky just before dawn, Matariki (the Pleiades) signals the Maori New Year. Traditionally, it was a time for remembering the dead, and celebrating new life.
In the 21st century, observing Matariki has become popular again. Fireworks, festivals, Heaven-bound kites, and here in Wellington, Hoe Tonga Pacifica Waka Ama Association (Regional Waka Ama Body) Celebrates and marks this special occasion by hosting a marathon Waka Ama Race.
We invite you our Waka Ama whanau and extended Kayak & Surf ski whanau to come test your skills on the ever changing water of Whanganui a Tara - Wellington Harbour. Come race with and against us in a time of unity & celebration of Matariki.
