Restrictions on water related activities within the Hauraki Gulf

There has been an alert in the Hauraki Gulf due to a possible toxin in the sea water.

There have been deaths of dogs who had walked on beaches, fish, penguins and other sea life. The cause of this is unknown and is currently under investigation by Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS).

Until further information or clarification has been obtained the recommendation from ARPHS is that no one should enter the waters of the Hauraki Gulf (extending out to great Barrier and the Islands of the Gulf) unless it is an emergency.

Advice is that people should:
- avoid contact with sea water and sea life;
- avoid exercising pets along beaches ;
- not take Children to beaches ; and
- not collect shellfish and cease fishing, swimming and diving activity .

If you do need to enter the water it is important not to swallow any sea water, and on getting out of the water you should shower ASAP to remove any sea water residue.
