History - Waka Ama Sprint Nats 1998

As part of our Strategic Plan we have outlined a need to document the history of our sport in Aotearoa/New Zealand so that for generations to come, learn about where we have come from and those that made huge efforts to get us there.

A little research has been done to deteremine that the very first National Sprint Championships was held in 1990 at Lake Karapiro, which will make next years sprint nationals in 2011 the 22nd Annual National Sprint Championship.

Kris Kjeldsen has kindly provided us with some of his library footage of Waka Ama events through the years. This footage is on VHS tape and we are having it transferred on DVD for everyone to enjoy. As the footage becomes available we will post links so you can all view it.

The first of these is some footage from Nationals 1998 Parua Bay - Whangarei - This was the last natioanls that was held up north before it moved to Lake Karapiro where it has been to the current day.

The footage includes some familiar faces and some great memories. and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Kris for making the footage available.

We look forward to uploading more memories and hope that this will be the start of documenting the history of Waka Ama in New Zealand for all to enjoy.

So if you have any stories, photos, or video's from the past, we would like to hear from you. If you have old style VHS tapes, we can arrange for them to get converted to DVD and Youtube
