HOE MATARIKI – Terenga Paraoa, Whangarei The 2nd Annual Hoe Matariki held on Saturday 19th June, Whangarei Harbour was a success

With paddlers and crews travelling in from Rangaunu (Kaitaia), Hokianga, Nga Hoe Uranga ki Kaipara (Kaipara), Orakei, Portage Crossing, Akarana Yacht Club, Manukau, Waitakare (Auckland), and Mitamitaga Ole Pasefika, (Whangarei).

The event also catered for competitors in surfskis and kayaks. Attendance numbers were up from last year with approximately 150 entrants competing.

The Race course and conditions presented sufficient challenges to keep paddlers interested and steerers alert to the changing tide, current flows and head wind. From reasonably settled conditions in the morning to chop, wind and rain by the afternoon – it was great surfing back to Onerahi from the turn-buoy marker (the Lollipop) on the 15km course.

The days programme kicked off with Race 1 Novice W6 won by SlapUps (Parihaka) . Race 2 men’s 5km winners W1 Paora Monk and surfski Tim McLaren, ; 10km winner surfski Greg Jones and W1 Jackson Tamaariki-Campbell . Race 3 women’s W6 – 15km winner Just Do It, Nga Hoe Horo and Race 4 men’s W1 15km sole entrant Steve Roulston and surfski Grant Hine. Race 5 men’s W6 - 15km winner Pineula Open and women’s W1 10km race winner Vesna Radonich. A good field of paddlers represented from all levels on the day and a welcome home to all our world paddlers.

Not only was it an event to celebrate Matariki – it is an event increasing in numbers for surkskiers and kayakers to compete. Parihaka stay close to their early beginnings and encourage first time paddlers, surfskiers and kayakers to give this challenge a go. Special mention to the Portage Crossing ladies on their first ever long distance hoe.

The Hoe Matariki Taonga is awarded to a Tai Tokerau Club who demonstrates and nutures the values of wakaama at all levels of the sport. Last year’s recipients Nga Urunga o Kaipara have the right to choose the next recipient and this year that Club was local club Te Puu Ao from Tutukaka. They received the award n recognition of the support given to the development of youth and wananga to address social issues affecting young men and women.

Although a relatively new Club that has been formed over the last 2-3 years they are not new to wakaama. Led by husbnd and wife Ralph & Auriole Ruka they also belong to members of their kapa haka group which competed on the same day in Whangarei for the Tai Tokerau Kapa Haka Regionals.

Special thanks go to our local event sponsor, Sportsman’s Choice and volunteers from the Whangarei Rotary.. A big thank you to our competitors, both visitors and locals, who turned up on the day in numbers to provide an awesome field to race against. We hope you had as much fun and enjoyment on the water as Parihaka Sports Club Inc had in hosting you. We look forward to having you back in 2011!!!
