History of Puketirini
“Puketirini” is the original name of the area of land which the park is situated within. The name “Puketirini” means “the hills and streams”, “Puke” meaning “hills” and “Tirini” meaning “streams”. The area comprising Puketirini was predominantly in private ownership prior to being obtained by the Crown for coal mining operations and state housing purposes between 1940 and 1980. The original lake, Lake Rotoiti, became Crown land in 1865, and was earmarked for coal mining in 1929. Lake Rotoiti was eventually considered dry land in 1986, due to it being drained for mining.

Mining ended at Weavers Opencast Mine in December 1993, after which Solid Energy began a project to rehabilitate the disused mine into a lake. This is the first New Zealand coal pit of its size to be transformed into a lake (Balvert, 2006). In 2003 Puketirini was opened for off-water recreational activities. Unofficially known as Lake Weaver or Weavers Lake, Council resolved to identify ‘Lake Puketirini’ as the official name for the lake.

Special note to clubs:
To ensure the weekend runs smoothly, the organising committee ask that all participating clubs nominate a club captain or club contact person. It is important all information from the panui is understood by all coaches and managers.

The organising committee appreciate the time and effort paddlers, coaches and managers (including whanau) make in preparation for Regionals. We hope that all clubs are able to attend and wish all W1 paddlers the best during trial day (Sunday).

If you have any further queries regarding any of the items from both panui attached, please forward these queries to the Race Director: Rangimarie Morgan:
[email protected]

Finally, first race starts at 8.30am for both days – to ensure we get through the races and trials. There will also be no swimming during the race days. These notes are included on the panui for both W1 & W6 but need to be noted at a glance.

Ma te Atua hei manaaki, hei tiaki
