BEREAVEMENT: Eru Thompson

E te Papa Eru, E te rangatira, e te Whatukura,

Kei te hotuhotu te manawa mou Hoki atu ki te kapunipunitanga o te Atua,

kua riro koe kia ratau , Kua wheturangitia , kua piataata mai ana,i nga rangi tuhaha, na reira, haere, haere , haere atu ra

On behalf of Nga Hau Maiangi Committee, we are deeply saddened by the loss of esteemed Kaumatua of Ngati Mahanga, Kawerau a Maki, Te Waiohua and Tainui whanui who passed away yesterday afternoon.

Eru Thompson is a prominent figure in Te Ao Maori and Te Ao Pakeha and an integral part of many community, council and sporting boards.

Eru has a long association with waka ama, as a founding member of Te Paerangi Waka Ama Club and the kaumatua for Manukau Outrigger Canoe Club and Portage Crossing Waka Ama Club.

Eru Thompson is currently the Chairman of “Nga Hau Maiangi” a partnership with four waka ama clubs and a rowing club. This name was bequeathed by Eru after the great waka Tainui that travelled through the Tamaki estuary and was gently caressed and guided by the winds.

Eru’s dream was to see the building erected and it was one of his many drivers to see it completed since the project’s inception 14 years ago.

He played a key role in the turning of the sod mid-October which signified the beginning of the works for the new pontoon and building.

The opening of the building in February 2015 will be a legacy realised and a lasting symbol of Eru’s passion and desire to see people come together for the betterment of water sports.

No reira e te matua, moe mai ra e te papa Eru e te poutokomanawa....
