2019 World Distance Championship New Zealand selection process and information

The following information outlines Waka Ama New Zealand's process for the 2019 World Distance Championship.

The IVF has announced the decision to include more age categories into the 2019 World Distance Championship -Sunshine Coast Australia

The 2019 event is a trial of a new programme of events and, if successful, the programme will likely stay for 2021.

The categories will be:

Men and Women V6 and V1:

J19

Premier

Master 40

Master 50

Master 60

Master 70

Mixed Para Va'a

For each of these V6 and V1 categories there will be only 1 entry per country.

New Zealand Selection Process

Having reviewed past campaigns, the competition model and the resources available within our organisation, the Waka Ama New Zealand has developed the following plan for national representation at the 2019 World Distance Championship:

Waka Ama New Zealand (WANZ) will select, by application process, a Coach for each of the Premier Men, Premier Women and the Para Mixed teams only. They will be known as the New Zealand Waka Ama Distance Coaches

These 3 coaches will have their selection process, approved by WANZ, for each of their V6 categories: Premier Women, Premier Men and Para

Representation for every other category will be decided by the first teams across the line at the Long Distance Nationals in April 2019

The V1 representatives for every category will also be decided by first across the line at the Long Distance Nationals in April 2019

The selection of the 3 New Zealand Distance Coaches will be completed by 12 September 2018

The Premier Women, Premier Men and Para team selections will be completed prior to the New Zealand Long Distance Nationals in April 2019.

Manager

Waka Ama New Zealand will carry out a process for the appointment of a National Manager. The position will be by application and appointment . The New Zealand Manager’s airfare and accommodation will be covered for the World Distance Championship.

Logistics and Admin

The WANZ Office will liaise with the National Coaches and will carry out logistics, admin and bookings for training camps etc. This will offer a more co-ordinated approach.

All club teams that qualify will be acknowledged as qualifying to represent New Zealand at the World Distance Championship 2019 and will be provided with a uniform and letters from WANZ that confirm New Zealand representation.

All cost of travel and accommodation overseas for the 3 New Zealand Distance Coach positions will be covered. We want to elevate the status of these individuals. They are our national coaches, and this will help to build a pathway to recognise coaching excellence.

We will also co-ordinate and pay for the Premier Men and Premier Women’s team coaches to facilitate at least one (1) session with the age division teams who qualify at the Long Distance Nationals. Many of those teams may not have formal coaches and this will enable them to benefit from some coaching expertise.

Waka Ama New Zealand will contribute towards the New Zealand Premier and Para team costs – the dollar amount of that contribution is confirmed in the table below:

Allocated $4000 towards domestic training camp costs each of the following teams: Premier Men, Premier Women and Para Mixed

$1000 towards each paddler overseas World Distance event travel and accommodation costs (Premier Men, Premier Women and Para Mixed)
Waka Ama New Zealand will make all travel and accommodation arrangements. (Travel is ex Auckland)

Maximum Selection of 7 Paddlers for the Open Men and Women and 8 Paddlers for the Para Va’a Team

Waka Ama New Zealand will supply the teams with race uniforms

Waka Ama New Zealand will cover the entry fee for all Premier, Para and Age Division New Zealand Teams

Rationale for this approach:

We need to maximise our resources and at the same time elevate our best paddlers to the highest level possible. Anyone, regardless of age, will have the opportunity to trial for the Premier Women or Premier Men teams.

We will be elevating our top coaches and raising the status of these individuals. They will be our national distance coaches and this will also help to build a pathway to coaching excellence.

We will be recognising team management as a pathway.

We will be building, overall, a pathway for paddling excellence for all age categories.
