World Sprints NZ Qualifying Event

New Zealand Qualifying Event

9th - 10th  April 2022, Lake Karāpiro, Cambridge

Due to the cancellation of the 2022 Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Waka Ama Sprint Nationals, Waka Ama NZ will host this event at Lake Karāpiro for Club Teams and V1 paddlers to qualify.

This event will also be open to those World Club Sprint Teams (already confirmed as qualified) and Elite Squads heading to London in August.


Online entries for this event will be made up of teams and individuals from the 

  1. Club Intents (invitations will be extended to all clubs that wish to participate)
  2. V1 Intents (please note V1 regional entries are still being confirmed)

For the W6 Qualifiers, the following divisions will be racing to secure their place for the World Club Sprints*

  • Junior 16 Women - V6 500
  • Junior 16 Women - V6 1000
  • Junior 19 Women - V12 500
  • Master 50 Women - V12 500
  • Master 60 Women - V12 500
  • Master 60 Women - V6 500
  • Master 60 Women - V6 1000

All other divisions are confirmed and will be invited to take part in the event for their build-up to the World Sprints in August.

*Please note that this is subject to change if team intents are withdrawn

Please note that divisions are likely to be combined, WANZ will endeavour to provide all teams with as many races as the schedule will allow.


J16-J19 - $20 per person

Open and above (M40, M50 etc) -  $40 per person


This event will only run in COVID Protection Framework (CPF) Orange or Green.

Under the CPF, Government and Mighty River Power requirements - Vaccine Passes will be mandatory and need to be shown to enter the event for all event attendees (spectators, paddlers, managers, coaches, vendors, volunteers etc).

Please note based on UK government guidance, it is currently a requirement for attendees (athletes and spectators) of the 2022 IVF World Sprint Championships to be fully vaccinated.  

In addition to the above

  • Masks are encouraged on land. Please ensure you bring your own mask.
  • Everyone must scan in on the QR codes available or the manual sign-in sheet. This is in addition to showing your My Vaccine Pass on entry.
  • All paddlers must be registered with WANZ and entered via the online entry system for the race. There will be no late entries on the day. All rosters must be complete by the cut off date or will be removed from the event.
  • We will have a designated event space on land clearly identified by signs and cones. All attendees are welcome in our designated event space. We are not restricted by numbers at setting Orange or Green
  • Spectators are permitted and will be allowed access into the designated event space with proof of their My Vaccine Pass upon entry.
  • Hand sanitiser and cleaning aids will be made available at registration.  
  • Any sharing of equipment must be sanitised between races.
  • Anyone sick or unwell, please be responsible and stay home.
  • Above all else, standard waka ama rules and safety protocols also apply.
