AROCA 10k - Manukau

The last event of the AROCA 10k series was held off Maraetai on a fine and calm spring day. The event was hosted by the Manukau club.

As with all organisers in the series this year, Manukau did an excellent job in ensuring safety rules were met by all competitors. It is good to see how seriously and consistently clubs and paddlers are ensuring high safety standards are achieved.

Vance Winiata from up north gave Auckland paddlers an increasingly distant view of his back, coming in first across the line in the 5k Men's W1 race. Brent Whitcombe came in second to move up to second place-getter in the series overall. Gavin Clark didn't race, but was the overall series winner. First in the masters, and series winner overall, was Mike Hickson. Open W2 series winners were Peter Reaburn and Andrew Happy.

Lianne Reaburn was first across the line in the Women's W1, moving her to series winner of the master's division. Leanne Haronga didn't race, but was the overall series open winner.

Waitakere's Team West took out the open men's W6 race and the overall series, as did Waitakere's Waka Mamas in the open women's W6.

The master men's division saw Taniwha Grizzlies White confirm first place in the overall series, closely followed in the points by Taniwha MIB and Manukau Vaka Manu.

The open mixed division suffered over the past few events, without races being run, but Waitakere Prada ended up the series winners.

Over the series the junior division was dominated by Waitakere's J19 women's crew, Gapt It, who won all their races, and Waitakere's Tamara Panapa who was regularly up near the front of the women's W1 fields. The AROCA committee drew the Tamaki event as being the random double-points race. Provisional results for the Maraetai races and the overall series points are attached.

Congratulations go not only to the series winners, but all who have supported the series through the 2004 season.
