Selections 2010 - World Long Distance

The objective races for selected paddlers will be Hawaiikinui for the men and Na Wahine o ke Kai (Molokai’i) for the women – 2010.

Men will have, at least, 1 Open entry.

Women will have, at least, 1 Open and 1 Master entry.

Selections will begin with a W1 (ruddered) ocean long distance trial. Paddlers will be notified of the cost, distance and date by Friday 7 March. Only paddlers confident in rough water conditions on a W1 are expected to trial. A majority of the on-going training programme will be on a W1.

The intent is to select initial squads of: 24 Open men, 18 Open women and 18 Master women. These will eventually be cut down to 1 crew per division plus reserves.

The minimum age for women trialists are: (Open) 18 years of age by 26 September 2010 and (Master) 40 years of by 26 September 2010.

The minimum age for men trialists is 18 years of age by November 2010.

Paddlers will be able to trial for both World Sprints and Long Distance but will have to show evidence by April 2010 that they have the capacity to do both. Capacity, in this context, means the time and the money.

Paddlers who are at international races at the time of the W1 selection trial will be exempt from that trial and allowed to attend the first camp. However, you still have to fill out the Intent to Paddle Long Distance Form.

Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr will co-ordinate the men’s programme and Corrina Gage will co-ordinate the women’s programme. Other experienced rough water coaches will be involved in both programmes (confirmation pending availability).

Alternative objectives may be set if we do not field women’s crews with the potential to place in the top ten or men with the potential to place in the top 30.
