Update on New Lifejacket Law – Waka Ama Information

As many of you will have seen, a new law has been passed regarding the wearing of Life Jackets. This law has taken effect nationally across New Zealand on 9 October 2026.

The new law states that everyone on board a recreational craft 6 metres and under must now wear a lifejacket when the craft is underway.

The rule applies across all of New Zealand to people using small recreational vessels such as jet skis, dinghies, sailboats, kayaks, paddleboards, and motorboats.

While most waka ama (W6 and many W1) craft do not fall under 6 metres in length, there are some waka that do. We encourage all waka ama clubs and paddlers to measure their waka from the tip of the ihu (bow) to the kei (stern). If your OC1 or W1 is 6 metres or under, you must comply with the new lifejacket-wearing requirements while the waka is underway.

There are no changes to the existing law requirement that all recreational craft must carry sufficient lifejackets for every person on board and that they must be worn at times of heightened risk.

Please also remember that regional bylaws may require lifejackets to be worn regardless of the length of the vessel. Where a regional bylaw applies, it must be followed.

What does this mean for Waka Ama?
While the law uses the term lifejacket, within waka ama we commonly use the term Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Waka Ama Aotearoa NZ strongly encourages all paddlers to wear a correctly fitted PFD whenever they are on the water, regardless of the length of their waka. Whether you are 7, 17, or 70 years old, it is important that your PFD is the correct size, fitted correctly, and in working condition.

In accordance with Waka Ama Aotearoa NZ race rules, inflatable PFDs are not permitted at national events. All junior paddlers are also required to wear jacket-style PFDs while racing.

Please ensure this information is communicated to all club members and that these requirements are followed at all times

Reminder for Waka Ama Events
The new lifejacket law does not change existing Waka Ama Aotearoa NZ event safety requirements. Clubs, coaches, paddlers, and event participants should continue to follow all safety requirements and any event-specific PFD rules that apply.

Important reminders

  • The person in charge (kaihautū) is responsible for the safety of the waka and everyone on board, and for complying with applicable Maritime Rules and Regional Bylaws.
